The College recognises the knowledge and skills of current and former:

  • Sergeants of Police, their staff member equivalent and above.
  • Army Sergeants
  • Air Force Sergeant
  • Navy Petty Officers

Sergeants/Petty Officers are permitted to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) towards any qualifications listed for lower ranks plus one or more of the following.

If you have been an acting Senior Sergeant/Warrant Officer Class 2/flight Sergeant/Chief Petty Officer or OIC please refer to the Senior Sergeant rank in the menu.

How do I choose what qualification/s to apply for?

Some people know exactly what kind of qualification they want. For others however, things are not so simple.

Vocational qualifications have different levels. Your previous experience may qualify you for recognition at one level of the qualification you request but not at another.

When you submit your RPL application, the CLJA assessment team will assess your request against the evidence provided to establish which level is most relevant to your existing knowledge, skills, experience and training.

Qualification Levels and Descriptions:

Advanced Diploma - People working at this level are likely to be senior managers or technical managers. They apply fundamental principles and techniques and significant judgement in planning, design and leadership.

Diploma - At this level, people are likely to be managers who plan, initiate new approaches and apply judgement in managing themselves and others. They apply their knowledge and skills with substantial depth in some areas.

Certificate IV - Certificate IV level may apply to people who are supervisors or have advanced skills. They have a broad range of skills, can evaluate and plan, and can provide some management and guidance to others.

Certificate III - People working at this level perform a defined range of skilled operations, using discretion and judgement. They can select, adapt and transfer their skills to different situations.

NOTE: Many Diploma's receive up to 8 units of credit (1/3 degree) towards a variety of University Degrees throughout Australia and an Advanced Diploma has the possibility of up to 12 units (half degree) of credit towards a relevant degree. Examples of possible degrees include but not limited to:

  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Communication
  • Bachelor of Business
  • Bachelor of Business Administration
  • Bachelor of Justice
  • Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice,
  • Bachelor of Justice and Legal Studies
  • Bachelor of Social Science (Criminology)
  • Bachelor of Education

What steps does the RPL process follow?

  • Click on the qualification/s that interest you and analyse
  • Decide what qualification/s you would like to be assessed for
  • Click on the ‘Request an Assessment’ link and complete the form - all information is secure and confidential
  • Receive an instant instructional email on what evidence to gather and how to send it to the College for assessment
  • Collect your evidence and send it through to the College
  • Receive your RPL assessment result via email and if you have approval select the qualification/s that you wish to be awarded and complete the payment form

Once funds are received by the College, certificate/s and academic transcript/s will be issued and sent via 'Registered Mail'.

Qualifications available for RPL:

You may apply for one or more qualification/s that best emulates your policing knowledge, skills, training and experience.

 

Justice Qualifications:

Justice qualifications provide you with formal qualification that equals your police experience, knowledge and skills.

A justice qualification rewards your many years of working with the community and inside the criminal justice system. The Diploma and Advanced Diploma's enable you to receive credit towards a University Degree to help you with promotion opportunities or move into the private sectors, such as Probation and Parole or Law.

These are perfect qualifications to provide you with recognition for your operational policing experience and the diversity of your experience.

You can use your Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Justice when seeking entry and credit into relevant University degrees, for example Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Justice, Bachelor of Justice and Legal Studies or Bachelor of Social Science (Criminology).

Government Qualifications:

What are the benefits of a government qualification?

Commonwealth and State Government employment and University opportunities.

Government qualifications provide you with formal recognition that equals your police experience, knowledge and skills.

A Certificate IV and Diploma of Government (Fraud Control) are mandatory requirements if you wish to work for Commonwealth Government Agencies, see section 8.14 on page 13 of the following Commonwealth Fraud Control Guidelines 2011. In addition, section 8.15 recommends studies in investigations.

The Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Government (Management) enable senior police to receive a substantial qualification that emulates their ability, knowledge, skills and experience at that level and can be used to support an application for senior roles in Commonwealth and State Government.

You can use your Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Government when seeking entry and credit into relevant University degrees.

Government qualifications are very powerful not only providing recognition for your years of experience but they position you to move into other Commonwealth and State Government employment which maintains all your police entitlements such as sick leave, holidays and superannuation.

Security and Risk Management Qualifications:

Security and risk management qualifications are a very modern in design and they provide you with formal recognition that equals your police experience, knowledge and skills.

A Certificate IV and Diploma of Security and Risk Management are qualifications that will enable you to seek employment in the following positions:

Security services, manager, analyst, advisor, specialist, consultant, administrator, technician in Commonwealth and State Government, mining, IT, insurance, building, property and environmental industries.

You can use your Diploma of Security and Risk Management when seeking entry and credit into relevant University degrees.

Management qualifications provide you with formal recognition that equals your police supervisory and management experience, knowledge and skills.

Management qualifications and experience are invaluable assets in any industry and sort after in all government and private sectors throughout Australia.

You can use a Diploma of Management (if you have been an OIC or acting Senior Sergeant) when seeking entry and credit into relevant University degrees, for example Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Business Administration.

Police academy and operational training experience:

What are the benefits of a training and assessment qualification?

Employment opportunities.

The current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) qualification provides you with formal recognition that permits you to enter Vocational Education where you can teach many vocational areas relevant to your police experience, knowledge and skills.

For example Justice, Government, Investigations, Business, Management and Security and Risk Management. It is also advisable to hold qualifications in areas you wish to teach.

Secondary employment is available in this industry where you can work as a casual, part time or full time employee for TAFE or a Private Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

Investigations - Private Investigations

What are the benefits of an investigation qualification?

Employment opportunities.

The Certificate III in Investigative Services CPP30607 qualification is a mandatory licence requirement in all Australian States. It provides you with formal recognition that permits you to apply for a licence that will enable you to seek employment as a Private Investigator - Inquiry Agent.

NOTE: No education level is required to apply for a licence in the Northern Territory and no licence is required in the ACT at this time, however enquiries have revealed that a NSW licence is preferred. See individual employers for their requirements as licencing requirements are regularly reviewed.

You can work in a very diverse and growing investigation industry that includes:

  • insurance fraud and claims investigation
  • assessment and resolution
  • corporate fraud and risk management
  • aviation accident and loss investigation

This is a perfect qualification for the recognition of operational policing.

Police Prosecutor experience:

What are the benefits of a legal services qualification?

Employment and University opportunities.

Legal services qualifications provide you with formal recognition that equals your police prosecution experience, knowledge and skills.

These qualifications and experience in police prosecution are invaluable assets in any law firm and Government legal areas throughout Australia.

You can use your Certificate IV to enter the Diploma of Legal Services that can then be used to enter the legal profession with the title of 'Paralegal' or when seeking entry and credit into relevant University degrees, for example Bachelor of Business or Bachelor of Business Administration. You may also wish to use this pathway to move into law.
